BALTIMORE (AP) - New York Yankees right-hander Joba Chamberlain broke a blood vessel in his thumb during batting practice Saturday, leaving his status for Sunday in doubt.

Chamberlain was scheduled to start in the finale of a three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles.
Chamberlain was throwing a ball underhanded back to the infield when he felt something pop in his right thumb.
"He threw a ball in and he looked down at his thumb and he felt something and looked at it. He popped a blood vessel and he got some treatment during the game," manager Joe Girardi said late Saturday night. "We don't think it will be an issue but we have to protect ourselves."
Gene Monahan, the Yankees' head trainer, told Girardi he didn't think the injury would be an issue.
"Joba was able to grip the ball tonight during the game," Girardi said. "We'll know fairly quickly when he starts warming up if he can go."
If Chamberlain is unable to go, Girardi said Alfredo Aceves will make his first start of the season.
Chamberlain is 1-1 with a 3.77 ERA in six starts this year.
