The Yankees expanded their roster, but they certainly didn't bloat it with young talent as you might have thought a fading, aging team with hopes of reloading would have done.
Instead, the Yankees brought up rookie lefty Phil Coke to pitch out of the bullpen and journeyman catcher Chad Moeller to provide emergency service behind the plate.
For his part, Coke did a solid job, pitching a scoreless seventh and striking out two batters during the Yankees' 13-9 win over Detroit.
But Phil Hughes remained in AAA along with Ian Kennedy, Melky Cabrera and anyone else you might have expected to see pop up.
The Yankees can, of course, always bring them up at any point but for now general manager Brian Cashman told reporters he preferred for players to get regular playing time. Soon enough there might not be any reason at all to keep them from doing that in the big leagues where they can be tested without the lingering, last-gasp fumes of a playoff run.
YANKEES 13, TIGERS 9: The Yankees won the slugfest of a makeup game at Detroit, scoring 11 runs in the first three innings and withstanding the Tigers' six-run fourth. Three Yankees contributed three hits apiece -- Johnny Damon, Bobby Abreu and Alex Rodriguez -- and the bullpen finally settled things down with three scoreless innings at the end.
