New York Yankees Notes, Quotes 2008-09-11

New York Yankees Notes, Quotes 2008-09-11
--C Ivan Rodriguez was suspended two games for his shoving match Monday with Angels CF Torii Hunter. Rodriguez, who said he wasn't surprised by the decision, decided not to appeal and started serving the suspension Wednesday. Rodriguez and Hunter got into a shoving match in the sixth inning Monday after a tag play at the plate, and the benches cleared but no punches were thrown. Hunter was also suspended for two games.

--LHP Andy Pettitte lost his fourth straight start to even his record at 13-13. The 13 losses tie Pettitte's career high, which came with Houston in 2006 and marks his most losses as a Yankee. Pettitte yielded four runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings. The Yankees will have a tough decision in the offseason -- as will Pettitte -- in determining whether the lefty should return again.

--RHP Joba Chamberlain threw two scoreless innings and struck out three in his third appearance since returning from the disabled list on Sept. 2. Chamberlain has given up one run on five hits in four innings in that span.

--LHP Phil Coke struck out the one batter he faced Wednesday during the Yankees' 4-2 loss to the Angels. The appearance extended Coke's scoreless streak to 4 1/3 innings in the four games he's pitched since his call-up. He's struck out three and yielded one hit in that span.

--2B Robinson Cano went 0-for-3 Wednesday and has just two hits in his last 25 at-bats. Other than a hot spurt after the All-Star break, Cano has had a disappointing season offensively and defensively in the first year of a multiyear deal. His decline has been a key factor in the Yankees' struggles.

BY THE NUMBERS: 12 -- Rank on the all-time home run list for Alex Rodriguez, who passed Mike Schmidt with his 549th homer on Sept. 3.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "There's probably 800 players in the big leagues, and the odds of me being involved were probably 2-to-1. It's funny. Somehow I find myself in those situations all the time." -- Alex Rodriguez, on his uncanny ability to find the spotlight, this time as the first player involved in an instant-replay ruling with baseball's new system. Rodriguez's home run call was upheld.
