New York Yankees Notes, Quotes 2008-10-27

New York Yankees Notes, Quotes 2008-10-27
--RHP Jake Peavy's name has been mentioned in trade rumors recently, but the Padres ace reportedly hasn't listed the Yankees or Mets as teams for which he'd waive his no-trade clause. The Yankees will be in the hunt for whatever front-line starters come on the market, but with LHP C.C. Sabathia headlining the free agent market, they might not have wanted to part with prospects in a trade anyway.

--RF Bobby Abreu reportedly wants to return to the Yankees, though the club has not made any decisions yet. Abreu hit .296 with 22 homers and 100 RBIs last season. It marked the sixth straight season Abreu recorded at least 100 RBIs, and it's the first time he'll be a free agent. Abreu said throughout the latter part of the year he enjoyed playing for the Yankees and hoped to return, but the team's muddled outfield doesn't make things simple. With Xavier Nady, Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui set to return, it could get crowded.

--RHP Joba Chamberlain apologized in a statement after he was arrested Oct. 18 for allegedly driving drunk. The 23-year-old was detained in Nebraska after speeding and was discovered with an open container of alcohol, according to reports. Yankees co-chairperson Hal Steinbrenner said the team would stand by its top young pitcher, and Chamberlain said in the statement, "I intend to properly resolve the situation and do not intend to be in such a situation again."

--Brian Cashman is again in charge of guiding the Yankees through a challenging offseason, as the general manager re-signed for three more years in early October. There had been much speculation as to whether Cashman would return -- both on his side after possible interference from Yankees co-chairperson Hank Steinbrenner, and the club after the team failed to make the playoffs -- but the Yankees' lifer made it clear why he wanted to return. "I've got a job to finish here," Cashman told reporters at the press conference announcing the move. "That's the bottom line."

--RHP Phil Hughes and OF Austin Jackson were selected to play in the Arizona Fall League's Rising Stars Game. The game will be played in Surprise, Ariz., on Oct. 24, with teams picked by development personnel from every major league team as well as Arizona Fall League staff.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- Former Yankees playing in the World Series for the Tampa Bay Rays: C Dioner Navarro and 1B Carlos Pena.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "This partnership brings together two of the finest sports franchises and creates a business that will take advantage of their tremendous insight and expertise." -- Statement from Yankees owner George Steinbrenner on the club's partnership with the Dallas Cowboys on a new concession and hospitality company that will attempt to cater to sports organizations.
