New York Yankees Notes, Quotes 2009-01-03
--LHP Andy Pettitte and the Yankees might be wise to find a way to work out their differences and figure out how to make a reunion work. While the Yankees have already spent $423.5 million this offseason and might not want to spend more money, Pettitte should be considered worth the price of insurance for the big-ticket purchases. Pettitte not only would give the Yankees a strong No. 5 starter, he would provide another veteran presence and a backup plan for an injury to A.J. Burnett or Joba Chamberlain. Pettitte, who wants to play for the Yankees but has balked at a $6 million pay cut from this $16 million salary last season, would also be better off finishing his career in a place he wants -- and can help contend -- than worrying about a few extra pennies.

--C Jorge Posada must be thrilled with the signing of 1B Mark Teixeira -- and not only because the slugger will greatly improve the Yankees' lineup. Teixeira's signing should put to rest any thoughts of Posada switching to first base. The move was toyed with last season but Posada chafed at the idea, repeatedly insisting he had signed his deal with the Yankees as a catcher.

--2B Robinson Cano has been helped out greatly by the Mark Teixeira signing. Cano can come back at a normal pace from a poor 2008 without the added pressure of trying to play a prominent role in the lineup. Without Teixeira, Cano might have been a candidate to fill in at the No. 3 spot, vacated by Bobby Abreu. That would have been a lot to take on for a player fiddling with his mechanics and trying to regain his All-Star form.

--OF Bernie Williams' comeback bid with Puerto Rico reportedly ended because of a quadriceps injury. The former Yankees icon had played in the winter league of his native Puerto Rico with the hope of representing it in the World Baseball Classic.

BY THE NUMBERS: 25 -- Cents the Yankees will charge for some seats in exhibition games at their new stadium.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Right now it's doubtful on (Andy) Pettitte, given where we are financially with this stuff. But things change, especially here, if Hank and Hal decide to do something." -- An unnamed Yankees official, speaking to the New York Post, regarding Pettitte and the possibility of the Steinbrenner brothers deciding to re-sign him.
