New York Yankees Notes, Quotes 2009-02-01
--RHP Brian Bruney became the last of the arbitration-eligible Yankees to sign, meeting the team in the middle with a one-year deal worth $1.25 million. Bruney, who passed on surgery last season so he could rehab a foot injury in time to return for the end of the year, had sought $1.55 million according to reports while the Yankees offered $1.1 million. He posted a 1.83 ERA in 32 games last season.

--LHP Andy Pettitte agreed to an incentive-laden deal with a base salary that was about a third of what he originally wanted so that he could rejoin the Yankees. Pettitte, who signed for $5.5 million with the potential to reach $12 million, admitted to reporters during a conference call his pride had been bruised while watching his value drop as the Yankees spent millions on free agents, but decided he wanted the chance to join a deep and talented starting rotation. "Heck, the bottom line is I'm a man and it does take a shot at your pride a little bit," he said. "But ... I wanted to play for the Yankees." Pettitte will earn several increments for number of days on the roster and number of innings pitched that could ultimately get him back to the $10 million offer the club first gave him. Of course, he had initially wanted a repeat of his $16 million salary, but the Yankees, who will use Pettitte at the back end of the rotation, were not willing to pay him that. The price dropped also when 1B Mark Teixeira joined LHP CC Sabathia and RHP A.J. Burnett in signing blockbuster deals.

--3B Alex Rodriguez yet again found himself square in the middle of controversy after Joe Torre's "The Yankee Years" book took aim at him in specific segments and reportedly revealed teammates called him "A-Fraud." According to the New York Times, Torre -- along with co-author Tom Verducci -- wrote that he felt the need to elicit the help of Yankees veterans such as Jason Giambi, Derek Jeter and Gary Sheffield because Rodriguez needed to "feel important." "Alex monopolized the attention," Torre wrote and the paper reported after viewing an advance copy. Rodriguez had not immediately reacted, though a report in the New York Daily News quoted a confidant of the star's as saying A-Rod was unfazed by Torre at this point. Rodriguez already realized he didn't have a solid relationship with Torre. That point was brought home when the manager batted his star eighth in the final game of a playoff series against Detroit in 2006.

--RHP Joba Chamberlain, who spoke at a public event with Boston's Jon Lester, told reporters he will begin the season in the starting rotation -- as he was told by the Yankees in November. "It's a relief, because that's what I'm used to," Chamberlain said. Chamberlain, who was arrested on DUI charges in the offseason back home in Nebraska, admitted he had shown poor judgment and vowed to improve. "It ain't hard to make a phone call; it ain't hard to give somebody else the keys," he told the crowd at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut, according to the Journal News. "As a man, you have to fess up when you do something wrong."

--SS Derek Jeter and C Jorge Posada didn't want to comment about former manager Joe Torre's book "The Yankee Years" until it came out, they both told reporters. The book reportedly includes private clubhouse matters going public and thoughts on everything from Alex Rodriguez's relationship with teammates to critiques of players Torre had problems with. "I think you have to wait to see what's in it first," Jeter said before the book's scheduled release on Feb. 3.

BY THE NUMBERS: $5.5 million -- Base salary for Yankees lefty Andy Pettitte, who was originally insulted by the club's desire for him to take a $6 million pay cut from his $16 million rate last season. Incentives can drive the deal up to $12 million.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I've got to. My name is on the book." -- Joe Torre to Newsweek on whether he stands by the controversial things written in his book, "The Yankee Years," with co-author Tom Verducci. Torre and Verducci have also said some reports on content have been inaccurate.
