New York Yankees Notes, Quotes 2009-02-27
--3B Alex Rodriguez shook off all controversy once Grapefruit League action began. In the Yankees' first spring game, Feb. 25 against the Blue Jays, Rodriguez homered in his first official at-bat. He also drew two walks in his five-inning stint.

--LHP CC Sabathia threw a bullpen session Sunday, one day later than scheduled. He had been suffering from the flu.

--SS Derek Jeter was slowed by an ailing right hamstring early in camp, but he thought the injury wouldn't affect his preparation for the World Baseball Classic.

--Jeter pointedly told reporters he is frustrated with hearing most of his time in the big leagues dubbed as the Steroid Era, reminding media and fans that not every player had cheated. "That's not true, everybody wasn't doing it," he said. "I don't think it's fair. ... That's sending the wrong message to the baseball community, it's sending the wrong message to the public, and more importantly it's sending the wrong message to kids, saying that everybody was doing it."

Speaking the day after Alex Rodriguez's press conference acknowledging his use of performance-enhancing drugs, Jeter said he supported A-Rod but didn't condone his use. "I think everyone was disappointed; I think he was disappointed in himself," Jeter said. "Everyone's disappointed, but you have to help him get through it."

--3B Alex Rodriguez didn't provide closure with his press conference addressing his performance-enhancing drug use as much as he opened new angles to the story. Just a few days after Rodriguez talked about being "young, naïve and stupid" with his unnamed cousin, several branches of the story had expanded. For one, the drug he claimed his cousin (named by ESPN as Yuri Sucart) procured in the Dominican Republic legally, was said to be illegal by Dominican Republic officials and pharmacists, according to ESPNDeportes.com.

A-Rod had also been linked to a trainer banned by major league baseball from private areas of their ballparks since 2001 because of a possible steroid connection, according to a New York Daily News report. Rodriguez did not immediately comment on the stories.

--LF Johnny Damon and RF Xavier Nady have been caught up in a financial scandal that left the multi-millionaires' assets frozen. According to a report by FOXsports.com's Ken Rosenthal, Damon and Nady were affected by an $8 billion financial fraud scheme involving the Stanford Financial Group and businessman Robert Allen Stanford. The assets of the corporation were frozen recently by the Securities and Exchange Commission, leaving the multi-million-dollar athletes temporarily facing the type of economic hardship that's hit the rest of the country.

"I can't pay bills right now," Damon told FOXsports.com. Nady told the site, "All my credit card accounts are frozen right now because of that situation." Fortunately for the outfielders, their financial woes shouldn't last as long as many of the country's other residents. "None of our clients is in any financial jeopardy," Scott Boras, the players' agent, said.

--OF Bernie Williams, the former Yankees center fielder and fan favorite, was back in camp, but folks longing for the good, old days shouldn't get too excited. Williams, 40, was simply preparing to participate in the World Baseball Classic tournament for Puerto Rico and his old club extended him the courtesy of coming to its spring training site. Williams, who had a difficult time parting with the Yankees two years ago, isn't quite ready to retire though. He told reporters if he felt good he might try to play someplace else.

--RHP Jason Jones was glad to leave the Yankees system when he was taken in the Rule V draft by the Minnesota Twins. "You just don't feel like a part of the team," Jones told the Pioneer Press of his experiences around the Yankees. "There are the veterans -- the superstars -- and then the rest of the guys. Here there are superstars too, but it feels a lot more like we're a team. It's a lot better chemistry." While there could easily be plenty of validity to Jones' claims -- as they've been echoed by observers in the past few years -- the 26-year-old pitcher's comments might be taken with a grain of salt as well. Drafted in 2004, Jones has not yet pitched at the big league level.

BY THE NUMBERS: 19.5 million -- Combined salary for Yankee outfielders Johnny Damon and Xavier Nady, who couldn't pay their bills recently when assets were frozen because of a financial scandal involving a company with which they had money invested.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "That's not true. Everybody wasn't doing it." -- Yankee captain Derek Jeter on his frustration of all players being labeled as cheaters during what has been labeled baseball's Steroids Era.
