--LHP Kei Igawa was given another chance to show he can finally earn some of his expensive contract from the Yankees as he was called up to replace demoted RHP Ross Ohlendorf. Igawa pitched in mop-up duty for the Yankees in Game 2 of their doubleheader, throwing a scoreless ninth to finish off the 9-0 win. Igawa had been shelled in his one start with the Yankees earlier this season and struggled all through his rookie year after coming over from Japan in 2007.
--RHP Sidney Ponson wiggled out of trouble early and ended up giving the Yankees six shutout innings they desperately needed in Game 2 of their doubleheader against the Mets. Ponson yielded five hits and four walks and struck out four.
--RF Bobby Abreu went 4-for-4 in Game 2 of the doubleheader and added three RBIs. Abreu had been struggling recently before the bust-out performance, which helped the Yankees salvage a split as the teams traded routs.
BY THE NUMBERS: 1 -- Number of earned runs Andy Pettitte had allowed in his last 21 innings through the weekend.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's time the National League joins the 21st century or is forced to join. The National League is playing the same way it did in the 1880s. That's over with. The National League should have the designated hitter." -- Yankees co-chairperson Hank Steinbrenner, to the New York Post following Chien-Ming Wang's injury running the bases in an interleague game.
