New York Yankees Notes, Quotes 2008-09-01
--RHP Joba Chamberlain is expected to be activated from the disabled list Tuesday and will work out of the bullpen to spare his arm the stress of trying to rush back into the rotation. Chamberlain had been out since Aug. 4 with rotator cuff tendinitis.

--LHP Philip Coke will be called up and placed in the bullpen Monday when the major league rosters expand for the season's final month, manager Joe Girardi told reporters. Coke, 26, is a highly-touted prospect originally rumored to be in the deal with Pittsburgh for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte. The lefty went 2-2 with a 4.67 ERA at AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Pa.) after going a more impressive 9-4 with a 2.51 ERA for AA Trenton (N.J.).

--C Chad Moeller will be called up when rosters expand Monday, according to manager Joe Girardi. Moeller had been up earlier in the year and impressed the Yankees during a stretch when Jorge Posada and Jose Molina were injured. Moeller hit .227 in 32 games.

--RHP Alfredo Aceves made his major league debut Sunday, throwing two perfect innings and striking out three in the Yankees' 6-2 loss to Toronto. Aceves had originally been signed by the Blue Jays in 2001, but balked the next year when the club wanted him to pitch another season in the Dominican Summer League, instead opting for Mexico. Aceves finally completed his comeback to the majors Sunday and was rewarded with a game ball.

--2B Robinson Cano's defense has come under fire again, especially after a wayward flip helped lead to a big inning for Toronto in the Yankees' loss Saturday. Cano later admitted the error could have been avoided if he made a normal straight throw to SS Derek Jeter on the double-play attempt, but told reporters Sunday he wouldn't change his game. Manager Joe Girardi also raised some eyebrows defending Cano's laid-back defensive play by saying the player had a "smoothness" that made it look like he wasn't trying as hard. Former coach Larry Bowa, who often got on Cano for his lazy defense, might beg to differ.

BY THE NUMBERS: 11 -- Number of double-plays Alex Rodriguez hit into during the month of August.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Robbie (Cano) has that smoothness to him that people are going to assume that it's nonchalant. Robbie Alomar was the same way -- he had smoothness to him when he played the game." -- Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who defended Cano's failure to make a crucial play by comparing him to former perennial All-Star 2B Roberto Alomar.
