New York Yankees Notes, Quotes 2008-09-05
--RF Bobby Abreu was scratched from the lineup with a jammed left wrist, but X-rays on the wrist were negative. Manager Joe Girardi told reporters Abreu injured the wrist sliding into second base in the ninth inning of the Yankees' win Wednesday night. He could not take batting practice Thursday, and Girardi said the club would see how Abreu feels Friday.

--OF Melky Cabrera will be called up to replace injured RF Bobby Abreu, general manager Brian Cashman told reporters. Cabrera was demoted last month after being the Yankees' starting center fielder for most of the past three years. Given instructions to work on hitting, pitch selection and base running, Cabrera batted .333 with eight walks in 15 games with Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Pa.)

--RHP Darrell Rasner could get bumped from the rotation again after lasting just 1 1/3 innings in Thursday's loss and telling reporters he was "ashamed of what I did tonight." Manager Joe Girardi didn't directly respond when asked by a reporter if Rasner would remain in the rotation. "We'll get to that," Girardi said.

--1B Cody Ransom continued to make the most of the rare opportunities he gets, notching the Yankees' only two hits through seven innings and later adding a third in the club's loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday. With DH Hideki Matsui given a day off, Jason Giambi took over that role and Ransom played first. He has gone 6-for-8 with two homers and six RBIs as a Yankee.

--3B Alex Rodriguez hit his third home run in four games, giving him 550 for his career. A-Rod has knocked in 10 runs in his last four games, picking up nine hits along the way.

BY THE NUMBERS: 11 -- Double plays 3B Alex Rodriguez hit into during August.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Robbie (Cano) has that smoothness to him that people are going to assume that it's nonchalant. Robbie Alomar was the same way -- he had smoothness to him when he played the game." -- Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who defended Cano's failure to make a crucial play by comparing him to former perennial All-Star 2B Roberto Alomar.
