New York Yankees Notes, Quotes 2008-09-08
--SS Derek Jeter tied Babe Ruth for second place on the Yankees' all-time hit list with two hits Sunday, which gave him 2,518 for his career. Jeter homered in the first inning, then singled up the middle in the third to tie the Babe. Jeter is now 203 hits from passing Lou Gehrig for first place on the club's hit list.

--DH Hideki Matsui told reporters he will work in the offseason to give Yankees manager Joe Girardi as many options to use him as possible. Matsui will require surgery on his left knee after the season and then face rehab, but he said he wants to give Girardi a choice other than DH, including possibly first base. "I'm pretty sure I could play the infield as well, at first base," Matsui said. Girardi said he expected Matsui to be used mostly as a designated hitter next year.

--RHP Mike Mussina lost a shot to creep closer to that elusive 20-win mark, staying stuck on 17 after the Yankees' 5-2 loss to Seattle on Sunday. Mussina gave up four runs on seven hits in six innings and forfeited an early 2-0 lead before watching his team fail to score again the rest of the game. Along with that disappointment, Mussina was drilled by a comebacker from Jeremy Reed that struck him in the chest in the first inning. Mussina said the incident didn't hamper his pitching later in the game. "I didn't feel like I had my best stuff," Mussina said.

--RHP Mariano Rivera picked up his 33rd save Saturday, pitching 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball to secure the Yankees' 7-4 win over Seatte. It was the fourth consecutive appearance for Rivera in which he pitched more than an inning, but he had been given ample rest for this one. The Yankees closer had not pitched since Aug. 29.

--RHP Sidney Ponson, who had struggled recently, pitched six innings of one-run ball to pick up his eighth victory of the year Saturday in the Yankees' 7-4 win over Seattle. Ponson had given up 18 runs in his last 9 2/3 innings and could lose his some starts if the Yankees fall further out of the wild-card race and opt to look more closely at young pitchers.

BY THE NUMBERS: 12 -- Rank on the all-time home run list for Alex Rodriguez, who passed Mike Schmidt with his 549th homer on Sept. 3.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "There's probably 800 players in the big leagues, and the odds of me being involved were probably 2-to-1. It's funny. Somehow I find myself in those situations all the time." -- Alex Rodriguez, on his uncanny ability to find the spotlight, this time as the first player involved in an instant-replay ruling with baseball's new system. Rodriguez's home run call was upheld.
