YankeesGround.com | New York Yankees News, yankees Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - --3B Alex Rodriguez left the game after getting hit by a pitch on the left quadriceps muscle in the sixth, but his right quadriceps muscle injury apparently is still bothering him, too. Asked if the right quad was worse than it had been the past couple of days, Rodriguez nodded and said, "Yeah. The key for me now is to get healthy... There's no way I could play (Tuesday)." Rodriguez, who had been a DH to rest the right quad, acknowledged he may have attempted to return from the injury too early last week. He missed two games for the birth of his daughter, then sat out a third when he returned, but played the next day. Manager Joe Girardi, who has made a habit of downplaying injuries recently, said Rodriguez was "just not 100 percent. We felt, you know, let's get him out, get him a day off tomorrow, see how he feels. But he's not 100 percent. You can see that by the way he's running. We feel he was good enough to play but we just thought it best we get him out."
--C Jorge Posada was scheduled to fly to Birmingham, Ala., on Monday, to meet with noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. Posada was placed on the disabled list for the first time in his career with a right shoulder injury. The catcher said Sunday it was the biggest disappointment of his career and wanted to find out what was wrong because it felt like more than the strain an MRI had showed earlier in April. Monday marked the first time since Sept. 1, 1996 the Yankees played a game without Posada on the active roster. "It's kind of strange when you walk in the clubhouse and you don't see him there," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. --C Chris Stewart was called up from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace Jorge Posada on the roster. Stewart, who's appeared in just 23 games in the majors, will back up Jose Molina. The Yankees were still hoping veteran C Chad Moeller might clear waivers. Moeller had done a solid job of filling in when both Posada and Molina were hurt earlier this month, batting .350. But when the Yankees needed relievers last weekend, they designated Moeller for assignment. He is out of minor league options and so the Yankees have to wait to see if another team claims him. "Hindsight is 20-20," manager Joe Girardi said of the move with Moeller, adding the Yankees had received word from both Posada and Molina that they felt all right.
--RHP Mike Mussina earned his second straight win, utilizing a changeup that fell into the 60-mph range and pitching around Indians slugger Victor Martinez in a key spot in the fifth. Mussina had come under fire for not being as prudent with Boston's Manny Ramirez after a pair of games in which Ramirez tagged Mussina for a key double and two home runs. Mussina went five innings, yielding seven hits and two runs. While he went 0-2 with a 9.35 ERA against the rival Red Sox, Mussina has gone 3-1 with a 3.04 ERA against the rest of the league.
--RHP Jonathan Albaladejo has continued to make the most of the opportunities afforded him this season, pitching a scoreless inning to lead off a four-reliever effort that held the Indians to one hit in the Yankees' 5-2 win Monday night. Albaladejo, who first came up in early April and returned after a foot injury to RHP Brian Bruney, lowered his ERA to 2.08.
BY THE NUMBERS: 1,450 -- Games Yankees C Jorge Posada had played before making his first trip to the disabled list.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "Everybody's not perfect; it's the way it's going to be." -- RHP Joba Chamberlain, after taking the first major league loss of his career on April 24.
