OUR TURN
The cruel irony is that steroids energize athletic careers - until the players taking them are caught.

Then what was once a benefit becomes a scourge, damaging both the players and their sport.

Some of the biggest stars in Baseball history may be learning that sad truth, including Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez and former pitcher Roger Clemens.

A urine sample that Bonds provided in 2003 has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs, the New York Times reported.

While the sample did not test positive during the initial testing, it was retested after federal authorities seized it in 2004, this time coming up positive.

In the Clemens case, preliminary tests have linked his DNA to blood in the syringes that his former personal trainer claims he used to inject the ex-star with performance-enhancing drugs, the Washington Post reported.

Prosecutors have asked a federal grand jury to decide whether to indict the seven-time Cy Young award winner.

Bonds and Clemens must be presumed innocent until someone proves otherwise, but their woes are damaging Baseball.

Rodriguez acknowledged taking steroids after Sports Illustrated reported he had tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs when he played for the Texas Rangers in 2003.

Rodriguez condemned a culture that places athletes under tremendous pressure to excel - a culture fostered, to a large extent, by Major League Baseball, which thrived on record-shattering performances without doing enough to address the drugs that may have led to those performances.

In both the Rodriguez and Bonds cases, the irony is particularly acute because the tests, designed to be anonymous, were conducted a year before Baseball started imposing penalties for steroid use.

Some 104 players reportedly tested positive in the 2003 drug screening. Why not reveal their names? Not only is it unfair to single out superstars through selective leaks, but it also places an already beleaguered sport under an increasingly toxic cloud.

Baseball's management let the steriod situation get out of hand. And damage continues to be inflicted on the game.
