Instead, the Yankee GM departed Las Vegas early Thursday morning to fly to Texas for a sit-down with Andy Pettitte a story The New York Post broke exclusively on nypost.com.
Cashman was expected to deliver the following message to Pettitte:
We have signed CC Sabathia. We are about to sign A.J. Burnett. We already have Chien-Ming Wang and Joba Chamberlain.
So that leaves just one rotation spot and it's time you take our contract offer or we're prepared to fill that spot with someone else and close the door on you.
The Yankees are offering the 36-year-old Pettitte $10 million for 2009. He made $16 million last year, when he went 14-14, and he does not want a pay cut. However, the Yankees are insistent that he now is more of a No. 4 or 5 starter.
One team executive said recently that, "In the real world, Andy is probably now an $8 million a year pitcher at most. We are willing to pay $2 million more because we love him, because he is a Yankee and we want it to stay that way."
