Sabathia misses BP session with flu
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia missed his scheduled batting practice session Saturday because of the flu.

Sabathia was sent home from Steinbrenner Field after it was determined he was too ill for the workout. Manager Joe Girardi didn't rule out that the expected opening-day starter could take the hill on Sunday.

"He said he wanted to throw his BP and he ended up throwing up again," Girardi said. "He just said, 'I'll wait until tomorrow."'

Sabathia, considered the top free agent during the offseason, signed a $161 million, seven-year deal with the Yankees. He is scheduled to make his first spring training start on March 6.

Right-hander A.J Burnett, who signed an $82.5 million, five-year free-agent contract in the offseason, had his first batting practice session. Joba Chamberlain threw to hitters for the second time, making 40 pitches in two segments of 20 each.

"I threw everything," Chamberlain said. "For February 21st, I feel all right. It's feels good."

While the Yankees' rotation appears set with Sabathia, Burnett, Chamberlain, Andy Pettitte and Chien-Ming Wang, the same can't be said for right and center field.

Xavier Nady and Nick Swisher are competing for the right-field job, while the center-field competition features Melky Cabrera and Brett Gardner.

"The one thing you can't predict is, you can't predict how we're going to come out of spring training," Girardi said. "It's something I have to balance, juggle and make some tough decisions. The competition is healthy, but there's a lot questions we can't answer yet."

Girardi is not planning on using a platoon system in the outfield.

Designated hitter Hideki Matsui, recovering from left knee surgery on Sept. 22, will not be ready for the start of spring training games Wednesday. Matsui will resume light jogging Monday.

The Yankees expect Matsui to be ready for opening day. He will not play in the outfield during spring training.

"We anticipate him playing very soon," Girardi said. "I think he's right on schedule."

Notes: OF Bernie Williams, working out with Yankees in preparation for playing in the World Baseball Classic with Puerto Rico, is not practicing this weekend due to a personal matter. ... Yankees 3B Alex Rodriguez's daughter watched the workout from behind home plate.
