The last time the Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series, they had the highest payroll in the American League - $51,935,034 - topping perennial spendthrifts the New York Yankees by more than five million bucks.

Sixteen years later, the Yankees' payroll has swelled beyond $200 million, more than double the still-considerable amount the Jays are expected to spend.

Toronto - which opens its season at home tomorrow with a series against the Detroit Tigers - can take solace in the fact that a similarly distended payroll bought the Yankees exactly the same number of World Series games as the Jays played last year: 0.

Meanwhile, players and coaches from the 1992 and '93 championship teams can discuss the growing dollar disparity in August, when they hold a long-overdue reunion in Toronto.
