STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The ALS Association is a charity that remains close to the hearts of all at the Steven Schneider Allstate Agency. Chris Scandaglia of Huguenot, a licensed sales professional, lost his grandfather to the disease in 1990, and hopes to spread awareness about ALS by raising money to help find a cure.

Since ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, but more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease) awareness month is observed during May, the Steven Schneider Allstate Agency will donate $5 for every insurance quote given from May 1 through June 19 - Lou Gehrig's birthday - to The ALS Association, Greater New York Chapter.

Last year, the agency was able to raise $3,150 to help fight the disease. Since the inception of the fund-raiser, the agency has raised a total of $7,650.

"With the economy the way it is, organizations such as ALS need the help more than ever," Schneider adds. "So we are putting our money up as a way to inspire folks to do the same. The agency is also hosting a raffle where 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the ALS Association.

Raffle tickets are selling for $10 each or $40 for all eight.

Items to be raffled: A framed 8x10 autographed World Series photo of New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter, donated by Derek Jeter's Turn 2 Foundation; two New York Yankees tickets for a to-be-determined game in 2009, donated by the New York Yankees ; a framed 8x10 autographed Super Bowl photo of Madison Hedgecock donated by the New York Giants; New Jersey Devils' David Clarkson autographed hockey puck, donated by the Devils; two New York Islanders tickets for a to-be-determined game during the 2009-2010 season, donated by the Islanders; New York Knicks' Quentin Richardson autographed basketball, donated by the Knicks; New York Jets' facsimile replica autographed 2008 football, donated by the Jets, and a New York Rangers' Markus Naslund autographed hockey stick donated by the Rangers.

"We started this campaign four years ago," Schneider said. "Chris came to me with the concept of this fund-raiser to help bring awareness and raise money for ALS because he wanted to do something in memory of his grandfather."

"I am really thankful to all the sports organizations who donated items for my fund-raiser. It really helps increase the popularity and awareness of the goal of trying to raise money for ALS and honor my grandfather, Frank Gallinaro. Each year we have tried to make the fund-raiser fun by having something sports-related to raffle off and I believe this year we tapped into New York's fan base," concluded Scandaglia.

Schneider will present a check for the amount collected to The ALS Association Greater New York Chapter on June 19. The agency, located on Prospect Avenue and Reeve Place in Brooklyn, also welcomes any additional customer contributions. Those who care to make donations may telephone the agency at 718-686-1200 for further information.

FYI: Lou Gehrig made his debut in the Yankee lineup on June 15, 1923, replacing Wally Pipp. The Iron Horse went on to play 13 consecutive seasons (2,130 games) where he compiled at least 100 runs scored and 100 RBI each season while setting an American League record 184 RBI in 1931. Gehrig also holds the record for grand slams with 23.

Unfortunately, Gehrig's career was cut short in 1939, when he was diagnosed with ALS. The neuromuscular disease progressively degenerates the nerve cells called motor neurons, eventually paralyzing the patient's muscles and breathing, resulting in a fatality 2-5 years from the onset of symptoms.

GOOD SAMARITAN STORY

Last Sunday, Lauren Garin was shopping with her daughter Maggie in one of Staten Island's newer shopping malls in Charleston. After making several purchases at the Christmas Tree Shop, the mom and daughter team ventured over to the Target Department Store, where they attempted to purchase several more items - only to realize that Lauren's credit card case was missing. The twosome re-traced their steps in both stores and even went so far as to speak to staffers in Customer Service in hopes of locating Lauren's case.

Upon returning home, Lauren was forced to make a slew of telephone calls in order to cancel her credit card accounts.

Then on Monday, Lauren received a phone call from a woman by the name of Laura who lives in Tottenville.

"She stated that she had found my credit card wallet with many valuable forms of identification inside," said the grateful Huguenot resident - and the two women met at the corner of Butler and Craig avenues in Tottenville.

Lauren said the Good Samaritan gave her back her case, but refused to accept any token of appreciation.
